Visiting Penang? Try the Clan Jetties!
I headed down with my friends to the Clan Jetties of Penang near my hostel during my last visit in Penang early May. As we did not have a car, we relied on our legs to carry us throughout the day. There was public transport but of course, we’d rather save the money.
Crossing the busy traffic from our direction of smaller streets, we had to be quick. I remembered running like a daredevil hoping that oncoming cars would slow down when they are nearing me. Nevertheless, I still had to run like a cheetah.
It was really hot on the days we went. (First day was to visit, the second to take more photos) Though I may have looked calm under the hot sun, I was really muttering under my breath about the terrible hot weather. Knowing that I am near the beach, I was already mentally prepared to feel uncomfortable.

The jetties were old ports for the Chinese immigrants in Penang’s history. Naturally, they settled at the port and hence, the Jetty Clans became a mini village until today.
Focusing on Tan Jetty; we walked towards the end and reached a seemingly isolated walkway. The walkway was really small and would instill a tiny fear into people who would be afraid of falling off the narrow walkway.

This walkway though, is the reason why I loved Tan Jetty the most; I took off my slippers and sat at the edge of the walkway, letting my bare legs hang off it. We purposely came back for this walkway. The atmosphere was beautiful and peaceful. The water looked murky but my eyes were fixated on the clear blue sky.

We spent half an hour just sitting down at the edge of the walkway, chatting while admiring the peaceful scenery. I had not prepared for the jetty to look and feel this relaxed.

There was something about staring at the vivid colours of the sky, looking out to the buildings at the edge of Penang, Though it was hot, but somehow my eyes were satisfied. I got to admire and look at this simple yet charming scenery.
I guess my mind wanted a fresh breath of air from the hectic city life. Coming here definitely cleared my mind of distractions; I felt like my worries are not to be focused on anymore, I felt more at ease with my life. Even though I was there with my friends, I felt like I could be alone with my thoughts, I felt like a free bird.

The clan jetties are simple attractions and may have nothing out of the ordinary, but it was definitely a breeze coming here, relaxed and forgetting about my own worries. Just being contented with the simpler things in life feels enough.
